Each of the five HWRCs operate on their own set of opening hours, with each having different schedules in the summer and winter ends of the year.

Through the summer months, all five sites are currently open every day between 9.30am and 5.30pm, although this hasn’t always been the case.

As a result of the need to keep the number of people on site to a minimum, opening times are currently longer than usual so may revert to their former pattern eventually, which was 10am – 6pm in the summer and 10am to 4pm in through the darker months.

The Five Sheffield Household Waste Recycling Centres

Let’s take a quick look at each of the sites in turn, including how to visit. All sites are available for Sheffield residents that pay their council tax to the city council, allowing them to dispose of waste in addition to their normal bin collections.

Shirecliffe HWRC

The Shirecliffe tip is considered by many to be the main dump in Sheffield, as it’s the one that tends to be open every day.

Shirecliffe Tip Opening Hours

Normally, the Shirecliffe Household Waste Recycling Centre is open from 9.30am to 3.30pm during the winter (1st October – 31st March) and 9.30am to 5.30pm in the summer (1st April to 30th September).

At present, the site opens from 9.30am every day throughout both summer and winter opening. This change is intended to reduce the number of cars queueing to gain entry before the gates open in the morning.

Before Visiting A Sheffield HWRC

When loading your vehicle to visit the tip, always sort the waste before you set off. At busy times, it’s much faster to dispose of your unwanted rubbish in batches if it’s already sorted. The faster each vehicle completes its visit, the shorter the queues to access the site will be.

The only waste that can be placed into general waste skips is that which does not go into any other container on the site. Staff will check what you’re placing into a general waste skip if they believe it can be recycled.

It is the aim of all five sites to recycle as much as possible, as this reduces the amount of waste destined for landfill.

Vehicles Requiring A Permit

The city’s five HWRCs are for the use of Sheffield residents only. No business waste may be disposed of, even if it is transported in a private vehicle.

If you have a small van or plan to visit a tip with a trailer, so long as the waste is residential and from a Sheffield household, that is allowed with a permit.

Permits need to be obtained in advance, and you can get one which allows up to 12 visits annually. Terms apply, but the broad criteria are:

  • The vehicle must be registered to you personally (not a business) and registered at a residential address in Sheffield.
  • You must not have another vehicle that you can use instead in your household for your visit.
  • No-one else at your address already has a permit.

In certain circumstances a one off visit can be arranged. You can find out more about your specific circumstances using the Veolia Permits FAQ.
