Barnsley Tips And Bank Holiday Opening

Barnsley have one of the simplest opening patterns in the country, with all sites open every day of the week.

All four recycling sites under the control of Barnsley Council are open on bank holidays, on their usual opening times. However, all sites are closed on Christmas Day (December 25th), Boxing Day (December 26th) and New Year’s Day (January 1st).

Outside of these three exceptions, sites operate all year round on the above schedules.

What Can I Take To The Tip?

Provided your waste is from domestic use, you can dispose of the following types of rubbish at the HWRCs:

  • Paper & Card
  • Plastics (Group 1 and 2)
  • Metal
  • Garden Waste
  • Batteries
  • Electricals, Appliances & White Goods
  • Soil
  • Rubble
  • Light Bulbs
  • Clothing, Textiles & Shoes
  • Oil (Both motor and cooking)

Barnsley HWRC Permits

Councils across the country provide recycling and general waste services through a combination of refuse collections and HWRCs. One of the problems this creates is that businesses have to pay a lot of money to dispose of waste, whereas residents get the service included as part of their council tax bill.

While most businesses take their responsibilities seriously, there are some who would exploit the Household Waste Recycling Centres if there were no checks in place to prevent businesses from illegally dumping waste with them. This would increase costs for all residents across Barnsley Council’s area, as the costs are covered in the council tax bills.

The way this is policed is through two methods:

  • Staff Monitoring
HWRC staff are always present on site during operating hours, along with CCTV recording activity on site. This allows the council and its staff to effectively monitor the use of the recycling sites in real time to prevent unauthorised use. It also allows for retrospective fines to be issued (or prosecutions to be pursued) if footage is captured and later found to show illegal fly tipping by businesses by using facilities for residents.
  • Vehicle Restrictions
Tips controlled by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council are only accessible by certain types of vehicles, in order to prevent access to larger vehicles that would be more likely to be carrying trade waste. These include vans, 4×4 pickups, minibuses and campervans. These vehicles may be able to arrange a visit to a Barnsley council owned site by proving that the waste they will be dropping off is domestic rubbish, and the vehicle is privately owned. Learn more and apply for a permit here.

Even if you have a permit granted, regardless of whether it is for a single visit or repeat visits (typically through a book of 12 passes), waste must be from a residential address only and not have been generated through trade.
